ExtraContent is an open source method for getting additional content into places that most content management systems CMS can't reach.

It was developed by a small innovativer group of RapidWeaver theme developers looking to extend the abilities of RapidWeaver beyond the two content areas typically allowed.

Many blog engines and CMS software are often limited to content being added to in either the main content area or the sidebar.

3 More ExtraContent themes, and 2 New Players.

This has been a heck of a few weeks for ExtraContent enabled themes. We’ve just seen the release of new themes from WeaverThemes and RWT, and now we have 3 more new ExtraContent themes from MultiThemes, ThemeFlood and Henk Vrieselaar.

Stalker from Henk VrieselaarHenk has been a big advocate for ExtraContent themes and has managed to add ExtraContent in just about every theme he has released in the last 6 months. STALKER, Henk’s latest RapidWeaver theme, has 4 ExtraContent areas that allow the user to add more content then RapidWeaver typically allows — EC1, above the Menu. You can use this area for some textlines or your logo. With a CSS code you can fill this area with any image cor colour — EC2, below the Menu. This area floats together with the menu and can be filled with text, images or a logo. — EC3, above the Footer. — EC4, below the Footer.

Check out STALKER.

ThemeFlood releases NewsMediaWill Woodgate from ThemeFlood takes what I believe is his first foray into ExtraContent theme development with his latest theme, NewsMedia. Will has taken the ExtraContent concept to the extreme with up to 15 possible ExtraContent areas in NewsMedia.

Will doesn’t stop there, mind you, as NewsMedia is packed with professional features like style switchers, mega-menus and horizontal scrolling menu bars.

MultiThemes is back with Panels ProAnd last but not least, old RapidWeaver theme star, MultiThemes is back in the game with Panels Pro, a theme that makes use of 2 ExtraContent areas. True to MultiThemes form, this theme is high and style and lush with all the finishing touches. Like a fine Italian automobile, MultiThemes leaves no corner unpolished.

Two New EC Themes, Two Unique Ways to Use It

Late last week the RapidWeaver community was treated to the arrival of two new RapidWeaver themes enabled with ExtraContent — WeaverThemes Imagine and RWT’s Slider. Both themes offer a very different approach to the ExtraContent content concept and their developers are to be commended for thinking outside the box.

Imagine

WeaverTheme's ImagineImagine from WeaverThemes is a highly polished and styled to perfection RapidWeaver theme that employs a sexy bit of javascript animation to tuck away and hide one of it’s ExtraContent areas in a drop down panel at the top of the screen — very cool. Imagine also has an ExtraContent area below the main content.

For the full list of features, visit the WeaverThemes.

Slider

Slider from RWTRWT’s Slider takes another innovative approach to ExtraContent in the form of a sliding banner. We’ve all seen them before but propagating them with content has always been a hassle. RWT has taken the ugly out of coding a sliding banner and made it ExtraContent easy. It can now be as simple as adding text to any page or sidebar that allows for styled content.

RWT updates H3 to use ExtraContent

RWT launches H3 with ExtraContentSome time ago, Gary at RWT released a theme, H3, that gave users a way to have a truly usable 3 column layout in RapidWeaver. The manner in which is was done was a little complex to the uninitiated though. Since the arrival of ExtraContent, however, it only makes sense that Gary would update H3 to utilize ExtraContent to propagate this 3 column and that’s exactly what he did.

You can check out the new H3 here, and take a look at the tutorial movies. Take an especially close look at this movie, which demonstrates how you can use ExtraContent to make a search bar in your sites header.
