Over the past few months there has been an explosion of new themes and theme updates that are all boasting ExtraContent. It’s an exciting time in the world of RapidWeaver themes as the possibilities become seemingly endless.
ExtraContent was first introduced in December of 2008 and since then dozens upon dozens of themes have cropped up using the technology. Here are just a few that have come out in recent months.
Henk has become a veritable champion of ExtraContent, pushing the limits of the his themes and the technology with release after release of ExtraContent enabled themes. Exposure has 3 EC areas, on the header above the title/slogan, between the content and the footer and below the footer. Exposure has a jquery fading dropdownmenu. Down- and Right-Arrows show the menu-items with sublevels for clear navigation through your website.
When opening a page the menu slides down with a fading effect. You can disable the sliding in the Theme Styles.
Say hello to Mirage, a new RapidWeaver theme that raises the bar yet again, making it even easier to design the site that YOU want to create.
Tired of rigid limits and cookie-cutter themes? Then you’ll love Mirage – a design experience that frees you to build a site that can both fit the mold, and break out of it.
Ever thought it would be great if you could just choose where the header image goes? Mirage can do that. But what if you want the logo and title of your site above the menu, and the header image below it? Mirage can do that too. Don’t like header images? Want to add your own custom image to the background of the theme? Maybe stretch the menu the full width of the page? Mirage can do all that, and much, much more….
Every once in a while, something comes along that really stirs things up. That’s what the iPhone did to the mobile industry, and in that same spirit we figure it’s time to set a new standard for RapidWeaver themes everywhere.
Introducing Phelix, a new theme that puts you in complete control of its exquisite design. And offers near flawless Internet Explorer 6/7/8 support (minus drop shadows and rounded corners). And automagically creates a completely customized version of your site for iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android devices. And includes built-in support for FancyZoom, CrossSlide, and Pulse.

This has been a heck of a few weeks for ExtraContent enabled themes. We’ve just seen the release of new themes from WeaverThemes and RWT, and now we have 3 more new ExtraContent themes from MultiThemes, ThemeFlood and Henk Vrieselaar.
Henk has been a big advocate for ExtraContent themes and has managed to add ExtraContent in just about every theme he has released in the last 6 months. STALKER, Henk’s latest RapidWeaver theme, has 4 ExtraContent areas that allow the user to add more content then RapidWeaver typically allows — EC1, above the Menu. You can use this area for some textlines or your logo. With a CSS code you can fill this area with any image cor colour — EC2, below the Menu. This area floats together with the menu and can be filled with text, images or a logo. — EC3, above the Footer. — EC4, below the Footer.
Check out STALKER.
Will Woodgate from ThemeFlood takes what I believe is his first foray into ExtraContent theme development with his latest theme, NewsMedia. Will has taken the ExtraContent concept to the extreme with up to 15 possible ExtraContent areas in NewsMedia.
Will doesn’t stop there, mind you, as NewsMedia is packed with professional features like style switchers, mega-menus and horizontal scrolling menu bars.
Check out NewsMedia.
And last but not least, old RapidWeaver theme star, MultiThemes is back in the game with Panels Pro, a theme that makes use of 2 ExtraContent areas. True to MultiThemes form, this theme is high and style and lush with all the finishing touches. Like a fine Italian automobile, MultiThemes leaves no corner unpolished.
Check out Panels Pro.
Henk has been churning out ExtraContent themes like a machine. His latest theme, AutoCue has four optional ExtraContent areas; above the title, between the slogan and the menu, between the content and the footer and below the footer.
But not to overshadow the other options, AutoCue has a neat auto scrolling function that makes it possible to limit the height of your layout, while making the overflow easy to access just by hovering over a an arrow or two. Check out Henk’s AutoCue.

Earlier this week, Henk Vrieselaar released another addition to the ExtraContent enabled theme field with his latest release, Magazine. Sporting what looks like two ExtraContent areas and a metric butt-load of other options, Magazine looks like it’s packed and ready for action.
We haven’t seen any screen casts from Henk yet, but if we do you can be sure they will get posted here.
Some really exciting ExtraContent news sprang up over the weekend. First, an ExtraContent-ish sort of theme popped up from Rapid Refills called D Scribe. While Nick, Rapid Refills developer, doesn’t go so far as to call it ExtraContent enabled, it does use similar technology. Nick prefers to call his implementation “Blurbs” instead, but the idea is the same by adding extra content in one place and having it show up in another. Perhaps if we all lean on him a little, he’ll make the implementation common to what we now enjoy in ExtraContent making the experience a familiar one…
Anyhow, you can join the RapidWeaver forum discussion here.
The next ExtraContent enabled theme to pop up over the weekend was Bohemian from RapidWeaver developer extraordinaire, Henk Vrieselaar. Bohemian is an official ExtraContent theme that makes use of 4 ExtraContent areas; one above and below the main content area (useful for blogs, photo albums, contact forms and Kwix pages without much in the way of content options), one above the footer and one in the sidedbar. In addition to ExtraContent Henk has packed this theme full of many other options such as over 30 header options and effects, over 60 background options for various areas of the page, font control, width variations, banner zest integration and much more. Henk has poured a lot into this theme so you owe it to yourself to check it out. Join the discussion on the RapidWeaver forum here.
