ExtraContent is an open source method for getting additional content into places that most content management systems CMS can't reach.

It was developed by a small innovativer group of RapidWeaver theme developers looking to extend the abilities of RapidWeaver beyond the two content areas typically allowed.

ExtraContent Stack Updated for Stacks 2

You may have heard the news going around that there is a new version of Stacks from YourHead Software has made its way into public beta. Stacks 2 is about the biggest, baddest, coolest version of Stacks ever released and we wanted to jump right on board and update the ExtraContent Stack to take advantage of all that’s new and cool in Stacks 2.

Ok, so the ExtraContent Stack is still just a box, but it has a new icon and does take advantage of some of the new organizational features in Stacks 2. And really we can’t take all the credit since @edbrenner actually got the ball rolling and sent us a nearly complete, updated version this morning.

Anyhow, you can grab the new version here.

ExtraContent Taking RapidWweaver By Storm

Over the past few months there has been an explosion of new themes and theme updates that are all boasting ExtraContent. It’s an exciting time in the world of RapidWeaver themes as the possibilities become seemingly endless.

ExtraContent was first introduced in December of 2008 and since then dozens upon dozens of themes have cropped up using the technology. Here are just a few that have come out in recent months.

Henk Vrieselaar ExposerHenk has become a veritable champion of ExtraContent, pushing the limits of the his themes and the technology with release after release of ExtraContent enabled themes. Exposure has 3 EC areas, on the header above the title/slogan, between the content and the footer and below the footer. Exposure has a jquery fading dropdownmenu. Down- and Right-Arrows show the menu-items with sublevels for clear navigation through your website. When opening a page the menu slides down with a fading effect. You can disable the sliding in the Theme Styles.

NimbleHost MirageSay hello to Mirage, a new RapidWeaver theme that raises the bar yet again, making it even easier to design the site that YOU want to create.

Tired of rigid limits and cookie-cutter themes? Then you’ll love Mirage – a design experience that frees you to build a site that can both fit the mold, and break out of it.

Ever thought it would be great if you could just choose where the header image goes? Mirage can do that. But what if you want the logo and title of your site above the menu, and the header image below it? Mirage can do that too. Don’t like header images? Want to add your own custom image to the background of the theme? Maybe stretch the menu the full width of the page? Mirage can do all that, and much, much more….

NimbleHost PhelixEvery once in a while, something comes along that really stirs things up. That’s what the iPhone did to the mobile industry, and in that same spirit we figure it’s time to set a new standard for RapidWeaver themes everywhere.

Introducing Phelix, a new theme that puts you in complete control of its exquisite design. And offers near flawless Internet Explorer 6/7/8 support (minus drop shadows and rounded corners). And automagically creates a completely customized version of your site for iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android devices. And includes built-in support for FancyZoom, CrossSlide, and Pulse.

3 More ExtraContent themes, and 2 New Players.

This has been a heck of a few weeks for ExtraContent enabled themes. We’ve just seen the release of new themes from WeaverThemes and RWT, and now we have 3 more new ExtraContent themes from MultiThemes, ThemeFlood and Henk Vrieselaar.

Stalker from Henk VrieselaarHenk has been a big advocate for ExtraContent themes and has managed to add ExtraContent in just about every theme he has released in the last 6 months. STALKER, Henk’s latest RapidWeaver theme, has 4 ExtraContent areas that allow the user to add more content then RapidWeaver typically allows — EC1, above the Menu. You can use this area for some textlines or your logo. With a CSS code you can fill this area with any image cor colour — EC2, below the Menu. This area floats together with the menu and can be filled with text, images or a logo. — EC3, above the Footer. — EC4, below the Footer.

Check out STALKER.

ThemeFlood releases NewsMediaWill Woodgate from ThemeFlood takes what I believe is his first foray into ExtraContent theme development with his latest theme, NewsMedia. Will has taken the ExtraContent concept to the extreme with up to 15 possible ExtraContent areas in NewsMedia.

Will doesn’t stop there, mind you, as NewsMedia is packed with professional features like style switchers, mega-menus and horizontal scrolling menu bars.

Check out NewsMedia.

MultiThemes is back with Panels ProAnd last but not least, old RapidWeaver theme star, MultiThemes is back in the game with Panels Pro, a theme that makes use of 2 ExtraContent areas. True to MultiThemes form, this theme is high and style and lush with all the finishing touches. Like a fine Italian automobile, MultiThemes leaves no corner unpolished.

Two New EC Themes, Two Unique Ways to Use It

Late last week the RapidWeaver community was treated to the arrival of two new RapidWeaver themes enabled with ExtraContent — WeaverThemes Imagine and RWT’s Slider. Both themes offer a very different approach to the ExtraContent content concept and their developers are to be commended for thinking outside the box.

Imagine

WeaverTheme's ImagineImagine from WeaverThemes is a highly polished and styled to perfection RapidWeaver theme that employs a sexy bit of javascript animation to tuck away and hide one of it’s ExtraContent areas in a drop down panel at the top of the screen — very cool. Imagine also has an ExtraContent area below the main content.

For the full list of features, visit the WeaverThemes.

Slider

Slider from RWTRWT’s Slider takes another innovative approach to ExtraContent in the form of a sliding banner. We’ve all seen them before but propagating them with content has always been a hassle. RWT has taken the ugly out of coding a sliding banner and made it ExtraContent easy. It can now be as simple as adding text to any page or sidebar that allows for styled content.

For more on Slider, visit RWT.

Sleeker Ultimate joins the seyDoggy line-up

Sleeker Ultimate by seyDoggy - another fine ExtraContent themeLast last week seyDoggy unleashed another new RapidWeaver theme with ExtraContent, Sleeker Ultimate. Making use of two EC areas, pre and post content, Sleeker is definitely a great looking and very versatile theme. With rounded corners, great texture and lighting effects, Sleeker is a theme that can keep up with today’s web trends.

One other thing that sets Sleeker apart is the split-hybrid navigation system that allows nested pages to be displayed both in a tidy drop down and in a vertical sidebar format. For more information, check out Sleeker Ultimate.

RWT updates H3 to use ExtraContent

RWT launches H3 with ExtraContentSome time ago, Gary at RWT released a theme, H3, that gave users a way to have a truly usable 3 column layout in RapidWeaver. The manner in which is was done was a little complex to the uninitiated though. Since the arrival of ExtraContent, however, it only makes sense that Gary would update H3 to utilize ExtraContent to propagate this 3 column and that’s exactly what he did.

You can check out the new H3 here, and take a look at the tutorial movies. Take an especially close look at this movie, which demonstrates how you can use ExtraContent to make a search bar in your sites header.
